Base Knowledge: All you need to know about bases //

I know when I first started getting into makeup I had no idea about bases. All this jargon about dewy-ness, glow and matte finishes got into my head and I just got confused. But I managed to get all the knowledge I know about bases in one post so that you can get a full understanding of everything base.

Foundation:
When it comes to foundation there are many things to think about. Coverage, Finish and colour match are the most important. If you are just starting out with bases, I would recommend a BB cream, CC cream, Tinted Moisturiser or a water based foundation. These foundations have a less than %20 pigment level. Most CC and BB creams even have 5% pigment level. Tinted moisturiser's are like foundation mixed with moisturiser. These don't need primer or moisturiser really at all and they provide (sometimes) spf. BB creams are a light to nothing coverage creams. Im sure a lot of you have heard a lot about them so I wont go into much detail, but I would definitely recommend these for teens or "Tweens" starting with makeup. Foundation comes in different pigmentation. Whether it be High, medium or light coverage, there is all different types. If you have the occasional blemish and some redness, opt for a sheer to medium coverage. If you have scarring, redness and blemishes opt for high coverage foundations because they can hide everything. Finishes are also something to think about. Matte finish foundations are good for people with oily skin so that there is not shine. You can get these in foundations or buy foundations and use a powder. Velvet finishes are like semi matte paint. They have a slight sheen but nothing to dewy. The dewy finish is a very popular finish amongst people. This finish is glow-y which produces the illusion of softer, younger looking skin. I personally like this finish the best.

Concealer:
Concealer is something I started using when I first got into makeup. It can spot conceal things without having to use foundation all over the face. You can conceal under eye circles and imperfections with concealer. I like to use under eye concealer that is 1 to 2 shades lighter than my skin to give my skin some light. It also creates the illusion of brighter under eyes and if you do the triangle trick you can create a false illusion of where the light naturally hits the face.  Concealer can also come in different colours. You can use green concealer as seen above to get rid of redness and salmon counteracts blue and black under eye circles. Concealer is a great product to give you more confidence and hide the things you want too.

Powder:
Powder is used to set foundation and concealer. You can also just used powder on its own, to counteract oil or use it to elongate the longevity of your foundation. You can get different finishes on powders too. You can get loose powder to add coverage and set face makeup. Pressed powder is my personal favourite as it is easy to use and sets base makeup nicely. I like translucent powders because they don't add coverage and reduce the risk of cakey-ness. Of course if you like a full coverage base, a powder with coverage is great for you. I recommend Soap and Glory's One heck of a blot and Rimmel's stay matte.

Primer:
Primer is not really necessary, but if you would like to hide pores or increase the staying power of your foundation a primer can come in handy. Primer's are a silicone based product that can smooth the skin, hide pores and increase the longevity of your foundation. Sometimes primers can be greasy so it is important to get the right primer for you. I personally like the Benefit porefessional primer but there are cheaper options on the market.

I hope you found this post helpful. I am by no means saying that I'm an expert on this but I thought the knowledge I know would be helpful for you.

What is your favourite base makeup?

  1. Sometimes I can get away with just foundation, other times I add a little concealer. I like keeping my base quick and easy so I just slap a little foundation on a go with it. I haven't really tried out primers or powders before, but the times that I have tried them I never really liked it because I felt like there was just too much on my face.
